2011 in Review – Hello, 2012!

The first few days of January are some of my favourite days of the year. Everything is quiet while y’all are nursing hangovers from last night and I get some time to hear myself think. I rang in 2012 last night with a few close friends, thai food, Taboo, and so much laughter my belly is aching today! At some point last night we all reminisced on our favorite NYE experiences, and without a doubt my answer to the same question next year will be the eve of 2012.

So, a new year means it’s time for the annual look back at the year that was and a brief look ahead at the year to come. Previous reviews are here and here.

Disclaimer: 2011 had some rough patches and I immediately want to associate it with negative words like stressful, yucky, and not fun. However, that’s no fun to read about, so I’m going to heave a sigh of relief, turn a new leaf, and think about what good things this year taught me.

In 2011, I learned that…

  • People need people. Oh man, did I ever need some people this year. I learned that when the going gets tough, it’s best to be surrounded by those who can support you. I did my fair share of leaning on friends and family in 2011, so perhaps in 2012 I can repay the favour when someone else needs some support. I’m great at listening, giving hugs, crying with you (cathartic, I swear!), and strategizing awesome solutions to crappy problems.
  • I’m awesome at finding solutions. Give me some margaritas, a back deck and a nice thick notepad and I’m 110% confident in my problem solving abilities - no technology required! This year, I found lots of solutions to lots of problems, and although I had some (much needed) help along the way, I’ll never doubt that there’s always a solution for any problem again.
  • I do have some willpower. I have only one compound word for you – GMATS. I studied for and sat the exam in less than 90 days. Huzzah!

What am I looking forward to in 2012?

MORE. That’s my word for this new year. I want more change, more challenges, more me-time, more fun. I’m ready to take on the world – 2011 may have knocked me down for a few rounds, but I’m back up, stronger than before!
