Five things for the week of April 8.

Guys, classes are over and it’s time to move on to exams! But, I thought a small pre-exam break was in order, so I spent Friday night and Saturday in Ottawa. It was great to see a IIHF game (the Canadian women killed it, winning 8-0 over Finland) and take in some sunshine on parliament hill.

Here’s some stuff to keep you interested this week. I’m off to start studying!

1. Roger Ebert’s 20 best reviews. A good read, especially if you were a fan of the late (and great) Ebert.

2. Mad Men Paper Dolls. Did you watch the premiere last night? Don’t tell me anything; I haven’t watched yet! But, these cute printables would be a fun thing for your office desk.

3. New messenger bag. I just ordered this new messenger bag, and I’m really excited to update my bike commute bag. I’ve been using a great bag I got at Chapters, but it doesn’t really cut the mustard on Nora the NORCO. This one though, will do the trick.

4. Doctor Who. So I’ve just been introduced to Doctor Who, and I think the new episodes of Series 7 are great! Who else is a fan? And, am I really late to the party? Matt Smith is so cool as the Doctor.

5. New TOMS! I got these on sale at Urban Outfitters this week, and I’m super excited to break them out this week.

Five things for the week of June 18.

Did you have a nice Father’s day weekend? I sure did – I did my first DIY reno with my dad’s help, so it was an active Father’s day for him! More to come on the reno later this week, complete with before and after photos.

Here’s what’s cool this week:

1. Word.

I found this on SaveImageAs, a tumblr ran by Miles Fisher. Check it out, he’s pretty cool.

2. Fascinating (and morbid) fact: You are 14% more likely to die on your birthday, according to a report I found via Eric Barker.

For a while as a kid, I thought that everyone died on their birthday, which, much to my relief, I was happy to realize wasn’t normal. Now I’m not so sure, though! And, with my birthday just around the corner… I’d better be careful.

3. Favourite GIF from Girls. Have you been watching Season 1 of Girls on HBO? It’s awesome. I love Shoshanna’s charachter. GIF Found via editorrealtalk.tumblr.com.

4. 25 fascinating things you didn’t know about Mad Men.  I like 3, 8, and 16. I knew 17. 22 is crazy, and 24 is fascinating. What do you think?

PS: I’m sad that Season 5 is over. Predictions for Season 6?

5. Tilt Window Garden. I wish, wish, wish, I had space for a garden, but I don’t. However, this idea for an innovative garden was really intriguing.

Five things for the week of March 26.

Here’s what’s on my radar this week.

1. [service] LugLess. I read about this cool new business over at Cup of Jo this week, and I couldn’t get over how cool a service this is. Basically, for a fee you can ship your luggage direct from home to destination and not even worry about the whole checking baggage process at the airport. Genius!

2. [music] Walk Off The Earth. These guys are becoming a YouTube favourite of mine. They are based out of Ontario, and have done some really cool covers/videos. I loved this song as the original theme of Weeds, and I really love their version. It’s a pretty rad video, too.

3. [movies] Netlflix. This is a one web product that I absolutely love. I kind of had a movie marathon weekend, and watched St. Elmo’s Fire (a little Rob Lowe 80′s awesomeness), The Business of Being Born (a fascinating documentary on midwifery), and a new favourite, Love & Savagery, which stars a Canadian favourite of mine, Allan Hawco. If you’re wondering how I found that last gem, it’s because of the power of Netflix suggestions. I love seeing what “taste profiles” they create based on what I’ve previously watched. The titles of the categories are hilarious, too. For example, “Romantic Dramas Featuring a Strong Female Lead“, and “Emotional Movies based on a book.” Oh Netflix, you know me too well!

4. [music] Shadow Days. So John Mayer has a new single out, but I don’t know if I quite love it yet. Anyone heard it yet? I love his old stuff, I loved the Trio stuff, and I have grown to love the last album Heartbreak Warefare, but I’m just not jiving with this one yet… Thoughts?

5. [happening] Dreamr & my $125 for Casino Nova Scotia. Last night, a new social organization named Dreamr hosted a Mad Men Premiere party at Casino NS, and it was a great time. Everyone took the theme seriously, and if you looked around the room, you could have thought it was the 60′s. Check out the website, as the organizer is hoping to gather more people together for social things like skydiving and paintball! Additionally, I won $75 cash and $50 for food at the Casino on a promo scratch ticket, so I guess I’ll be heading back in soon! Any suggestions on how to spend (gamble?) my $75 dollars? I’m soooo not a Casino regular…

Five things for the week of February 27.

Here’s five things for the week of February 27.

1. [Thing] Cuppow. I heard of this through a friend on twitter this week, and immediately this product seemed like such a smart and practical innovation. But, then I realized how it’s probably straight out of Portlandia and only awesome hipsters can pull it off. I’m in no way close to being a hipster. Naturally, I’m in love with the idea, but worried about how I’d look with one. I don’t think I’ve been so distraught over a consumer decision since I debated buying Uggs for practicality reasons (hello, winter?) back in ’04 when all the “cool girls” wore them just ’cause. The Uggs were indeed purchased, so someday soon I’ll probably buy this too. Who doesn’t love cool + practical?

2. [Place] El Ateneo, Buenos Aries. I sooo want to go here. Known to be one of the most frequented bookstores in the world, it’s housed in an old theatre. The photos are phenomenal, and from a geo-cultural angle, it’s an amazing testament to how old spaces can be repurposed in really cool ways.

3. [TV] Happy EndingsThis show is somewhere in their second season, but I only just heard about it through a friend. I’ve shamelessly spent the last few days watching all of the previous episodes, and I’m hooked! It’s kind of like Friends, but it’s set in Chicago, and they do an outstanding job with dropping in cultural references a la Gilmore Girls. And, I totally relate to this show more than Friends, simply because of my age. Friends was funny when I was in junior high when it started, but it got way funnier once I re-watched it in my early 20′s. Anyway, check out Happy Endings so I have more people to talk with about how funny Max and Penny are!

4. [Movie] The Artist. Oh wow, this movie was amazing! You might think that a silent movie would bore you to tears (and for some folks, I’m sure it did) but I loved it. It was such a great homage to the 20′s / 30′s and had a great cast. Go see it! And, come on – it’s the Best Picture for 2012!
5. [TV]  Mad Men returns March 25th! The countdown is on for one of my favourite TV shows to return, and IMDB is hosting a really great featurette that will catch you up and remind you where things are since the show went on hiatus more than a year ago.
